The Mercy Badge

The badge is a shield of the Order of Mercy, founded by Mother Catherine McAuley in 1831.

The Crown bearing the monogram “Maria Regina” signifies Mary, Queen who is the Patroness of the Mercy Order.

The Celtic cross indicates the Irish origin of the Sisters of Mercy and symbolises the Order’s devotion to the Holy Eucharist.

The Anchor testifies to faith and confidence in God.

The Motto Mercy, Charity and Truth - designates the spirit that should animate those who work and study under the shield of Mother McAuley.

The Outline (used to be red) suggests the Band of Charity.
